RICH DANGEL (R.I.P.)

The LOUIE universe recently lost another good friend when Rich Dangel died this month. As one of the founding members of the Wailers of Tacoma, Washington, Rich was an integral part of LOUIE history. When the Wailers backed Rockin' Robin for their first release on the Etiquette record label in 1961, they inadvertently laid the groundwork for literally thousands of rock and roll bands. Rich Dangel's guitar arrangement on their rendition of Richard Berry's LOUIE LOUIE provided a rock and roll blueprint that others would follow. A calypso-based vocal melody was transformed into a garage rock standard in the Pacific Northwest, inspiring the Kingsmen, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Sonics, and countless other bands to render their own version of this catchy little song.

When I met Rich Dangel, I found a humble man without any trace of pretension. In a business where egos often obscure actual talent, Rich Dangel was the real deal. When not performing with his old friends The Wailers, Rich also led a jazz band based in the Seattle region. In fact, his new group, the Rich Dangel Big Band was scheduled to perform with jazz legend Ernestine Anderson for a special New Year's Eve performance.

According to Buck Ormsby of the Wailers, the preliminary report from the medical examiner indicates Rich died from a stroke, aka a cerebral hemorrhage. The family will have a private service, and will announce a public memorial after the holiday season. He will be missed.

LOUIE PRODUCTION

Production on the documentary THE MEANING OF LOUIE continues at a steady pace. We continue to seek out completion funding for the project, which isn't easy during these times of economic turmoil in the USA. Which makes this project so very challenging from an emotional point is the loss of people that provided us with such great interviews- Rich Dangel, Godoy Colbert, Arthur Lee Maye, Pat Mason, Steve Douglas, Jerry Garcia, and of course, our dear friend Richard Berry, who was the main reason for all of this interest. This project is dedicated to preserving their memories, and all of the other great people that believed in this production. We wanted all of these guys to see what we did with this story, and it saddens us that they won't be able to see the final production. While the documentary remains unfinished in December 2002, we still hope to put the finishing touches in the very near future.

In the meantime, we are still actively seeking alliances to take this production to the next level. Venture capitalists, media moguls, philanthropists, and those seeking tax write-offs are welcome to contact us for more details. There are still people we would like to interview in distant lands, and there are still plenty of licensing details that need to be finalized. In addition to actual capital, we are also open to donations in the form of airline tickets, hotel accommodations, car rentals, computer hardware, blank media, and video equipment. Feel free to contact us if you have any leads on such alliances.

The good folks at Rock & Rap Confidential sent me a wonderful little article about "cyberbegging" Apparently, there's a whole bunch of people that have made some fairly decent money by begging on the internet. Karyn Bosnak was one the pioneers in this new craze, using her savekaryn.com site to wipe out a $20,000 credit card debt. Yahoo cataloged a lot of these sites under an "e-panhandling" category, which includes such inspired sites as "sendeadollar.com", "helpmeleavemyhusband.com","'helpleahgetpregnant.com" and the Internet Squeegee Guy, who "will wash the inside of your monitor screen for spare change."

I don't know if I'm ready set up such a blatant plea for financing the LOUIE film, but if any generous folks feel like sending a few dollars to the cause, I certainly won't complain. I have set up the coordinates for such contributions at the LouieLouie.Net Sell-Out Page. If you are interested in actually purchasing sometthing from this page with PayPal, be aware that I haven't quite mastered the technique of creating a decent html/java PayPal shopping cart interface.so that page is still a bit buggy. It's best to send a secondary note to confirm all the items you wish to order. It's also worth noting that PayPal is likely to take a big chunk out of every small donation. Every $1.00 donation sent via PayPal actually comes out to something like 70 cents. If you have any questions about the best way to make a contribution, drop me an email!

LOVE THAT LOUIE- THE CD!!

Right as I was adding the finishing touches to this little newsletter, I got word from Alec Palao of Ace Records that their "Love That LOUIE" compilation was chosen by the London Times as "reissue of the year!" I did notice that this CD was also chosen as a favorite choice for an alternative Christmas present by John Bungey in a December 13th article:

"Love That Louie- The Louie Files by various artists (Ace): is this the ultimate party album? It's not the first compilation of covers of the pop classic Louie Louie but it's the most thorough. No fewer than 24 variations, from Toots and the Maytals to the Kinks, of that famous riff: Duh-duh-duh duh-duh . . . And you thought Michael Nyman invented minimalism. Repeat until all party guests have got coats."

I will admit to being slightly biased towards this release. I helped Ace Records track down the Flip Records catalog, and I wrote a portion of the liner notes. This is actually the very first CD that used the original tape master of Richard Berry's recording, as opposed to a bootleg release mastered from someone's vinyl collection. If you love LOUIE LOUIE, you really should seek out this of this CD.

THE LOUIE MARATHONS THAT CANNOT BE STOPPED!!

The spirit of LOUIE LOUIE cannot be broken.

In November, WPRB 103.3 in New Jersey did a 2 hour LOUIE LOUIE special.

A month before, in October, Paul Malluk, aka "The Big Baboo" assembled a LOUIE LOUIE show for public radio station KZMU in Moab, Utah. Paul has talked about doing another LOUIE show, and can be heard online at www.kzmu.org .

On August 19th, Stanislav Zabic did a two-hour LOUIE LOUIE show on KLSU of Baton Rouge, LOUISiana. In fact you might even be able to hear some of this at http://www.LittleLighthouse.net.

Krissy Syverson wrote in to mention that a radio station in Fargo, North Dakota (96.7) was playing LOUIE LOUIE all the time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in July.

Tim of KOZY radio in Grand Rapids, Minnesota played a different version of Louie Louie every Friday morning for about two years. When he couldn't find another version to use in a given week, he went out looking for someone locally to do the song. In a letter to LouieLouie.Net, he wrote:

"One morning I brought the high school pep band in to play it LIVE (with no former knowledge to my morning show co-host, nor anyone else at the station - just a whole band showed up to play), to the cheerleaders trying to sing it as the Grand Rapids High School Cheerleaders Chipmunks (they sped up the tape) to another staff announcer doing it in a narration imitating Slowpoke Rodriquez (Speedy's cousin from the old cartoons), even our news director doing it as a dramatic reading with my accompanying on piano."

Maybe someday, there might be an all-LOUIE LOUIE internet radio station, playing every single version of the song known to mankind. When KFJC Radio did the earth-shattering MAXIMUM LOUIE LOUIE marathon in 1983, there were over 800 documented versions of the song. Almost twenty years later, it's been estimated that there's now somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 versions of the song. I'm sure that with the right promotion, another massive marathon could take place, and the people all over the world could use the powers of the internet to send in their MP3 versions of the song, doubling the number of known versions. Stretch Riedle, instigator of the original KFJC marathon, continues to collect every known version, working closely with Theo deGrood, Andy Martello, Clay Stabler, Phil Milstein, and countless others that have continued the LOUIE quest.

Cataloging all this stuff remains a massive undertaking, and if you'd like to see the results that I've assembled at LouieLouie.Net, there's two documents I am willing to share with the public.

THE KFJC MAXIMUM LOUIE COLLECTION is still in the process of re-organization. Late-night radio logs of the event weren't always accurate, or even decipherable, for that matter. The entire marathon, all 63 hours worth, is the process of being digitized for the digital domain, and in some cases, we don't even know who performed certain versions of the song. Like the marathon itself, the cataloging is the result of dedicated volunteers, whose commitment to the project is limited by other more pressing needs such as regular employment, food, and shelter. You can view the latest version of the KFJC MAXIMUM LOUIE cataloging project in the form of an Acrobat document.

THE ALMOST-COMPREHENSIVE LOUIE LOUIE DATABASE is the closest thing to a fully comprehensive database of recorded versions of the song LOUIE LOUIE. As long as people continue to perform the song, this document will never be complete. For now, this is as close as it gets to being comprehensive. Like the KFJC COLLECTION, this is also an Acrobat document. Corrections, and additions are always appreciated, even if it sometimes takes a long time for us to make changes.
